Multimodal approach to human brain function assessment

In human brain mapping, single and multimodal approaches to neuroimaging are used to obtain information about cortical function representation. The first strategy is based on recording data from single neuroimaging techniques and processing them in order to map one functional system at a time. Single neuroimaging techniques include electromagnetic based investigations (electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography) and methods for evaluating hemodynamic, metabolic and functional response (functional MRI, MR spectroscopy and near infrared spectroscopy). In this book, we will investigate the potentialities of each technique and the role of model-based methods to improve knowledge about cognitive process. The multimodal approach, which is conceptually based on the combination of different functional neuroimaging techniques that map functional and electrical systems into a single neuroimaging map with high spatial and temporal resolution, is increasingly used in presurgical diagnostics. In the book, we will discuss how the integration of different brain imaging techniques may be a valuable tool to brain function assessment. The textbook provides the tools necessary to understand both the physical principles and the basic signal and image processing concepts and applications, that makes it a valuable reference text for scientists and an essential source for undergraduate and graduate students in these applications.
